Oncidium
The Oncidium, commonly known as the tiger orchid, originates from the subtropical regions of Central and South America, ranging from Mexico to Argentina. With over 300 different species, it is one of the most exclusive orchids in the floral industry. Oncidium is known for its delicate, elegant flowers. Its graceful form and exotic appearance make it a true eye-catcher in bouquets, as a single-stem flower, or as a stylish decoration for exclusive events and weddings. Because of Its luxurious and refined character it is beloved choice among florists and flower enthusiasts.

Cultivation
Growing Oncidium requires specific care to ensure optimal growth and flowering. This exclusive orchid thrives best in daytime temperatures of 20-25°C (68-77°F) and a humidity level of approximately 65%. While the plant needs ample light, it does not tolerate direct sunlight, which is why it is often cultivated under shade cloth or in greenhouses where the climate can be controlled.
Most Oncidium species grow naturally as epiphytes, meaning they live on trees without extracting nutrients from them. In cultivation, they are often grown in airy substrate mixtures that provide their roots with sufficient oxygen and moisture. Depending on the species, Oncidium blooms once or twice a year, with delicate and elegant flowers forming on long, branched flower spikes.
Harvesting is done entirely by hand to prevent damage to the fragile flowers. After cutting, the flower stems are placed in water tubes to maintain hydration before being bundled for further processing and transport. This meticulous cultivation and harvesting process ensures that Oncidium remains of the highest quality, retaining its luxurious and refined appearance.
Care Tips
- Always use clean, cold water and refresh it every three days to keep the flowers fresh for longer.
- Cut the stems at an angle with a sharp knife, both when first placing them in water and after each water change.
- Do not place the flowers in a draft to prevent dehydration and damage.
- Avoid storing Oncidium in excessively cold conditions; an optimal temperature is between 10 and 12°C (50-54°F).
