Grower Nooitgedacht
Hydrangea
After a year of standing still, the weddings and events are slowly starting up again and the Hydrangea should of course not be missing. Edwin Burgers, from the Nooitgedacht nursery, has about four hectares of land, at least a quarter of which is used for the cultivation of the well-known 'Schneeball', which is extremely popular during the wedding season. In addition to the 'Schneeball', twenty-three varieties of Hydrangea are grown. Edwin brought the FloraPodium a number of varieties from his beautiful range.
Eleven years ago Edwin started growing cut hydrangeas. Cut hydrangea is a beautiful crop, an amazing product with a lot of potential. But a cultivation with snags. “These plants are just as stubborn as people, I'm still learning every day,” Edwin says laughingly. Edwin will not shy away from a challenge, he will always try a number of varieties that are slightly different from the standard varieties. For example, a few years ago he introduced the special double-flowered 'Lathyria', which he now has not only in the color pink, but also in a milka-colored variant.
His youngest brother Marco joined the company last year. Marco has an ICT background and has worked for other growers in this field for many years. The flower sector is also becoming increasingly digital and online marketing is becoming increasingly important. Thanks to the arrival of Marco, Edwin can now still focus on his profession, namely cultivation and Marco complements him in the digital aspects!
In addition to optimal 'customer service' and the pursuit of the highest quality Hydrangeas, Edwin is also concerned with sustainability. The company is MPS A certified, but this is mainly because there was a demand for it from the customers. The quality mark itself and the certificate are not really important to Edwin. He mainly wants to be able to justify the cultivation to himself.

New varieties
The hydrangea production season is from April to November. This year Edwin has two new varieties in production that he has high hopes for.
Royal Palace
The special thing about the Palace is that it is available in two colors, at the beginning and at the end of the season. Edwin does not cut the fresh color, but waits until this variety has colored through to a deep red color. Palace is super strong and has a very hard (slightly smaller) sphere.
Royal Parade
A beautiful clear blue hydrangea, also super strong and with a very hard, large sphere.
Both varieties will be available later in the season, but of course we were allowed to get a good look in the greenhouse! To be continued…..
