Cotinus "Magical Torch"

Every time we visit breeder Kolster's garden, we are in for a surprise. This year was no exception when we were given a tour by Robert-Jan Kolster. One of the remarkable varieties that caught our attention was Cotinus "Magical Torch".

This striking and impressive shrub boasts beautiful flower plumes. What sets the "Magical Torch" apart is its unique blooming pattern, as it blooms on one-year-old wood. Unlike most Cotinus varieties that bloom on older wood, this characteristic allows it to thrive in colder conditions. Even after a cold winter, new branches sprout in spring, which are then pruned back, leading to lush blooms from July to October (depending on the weather). The "Magical Torch" effectively extends the supply of Cotinus plumes, as the multi-year bloomers are typically harvested earlier.

Longevity

The longevity of Cotinus with flowers is excellent. Robert-Jan explains that you should consider Cotinus in bloom and Cotinus leaf as two separate products. Cotinus goes through various growth phases. When cultivating Cotinus for leaves, it's crucial to harvest the branches at the right time. If a branch is harvested during the growth phase, its longevity is not as good as when leaves are cut during the resting phase when they are well-cured. Cotinus in bloom features fully cured leaves and can easily last in a vase for 10 to 14 days.

Elegance in abundance! For florists, the "Magical Torch" is a splendid product to work with. Its slightly later blooming period seamlessly aligns with the upcoming autumn assortment. The flowers are robust, offering florists ample creative possibilities. The deep, rich color complements the late summer and autumn hues perfectly. An exceptionally stylish product.

Care Tips

Cotinus is a shrub, which means it has woody stems. Especially with longer stems, water may have difficulty rising up the stem. A clean vase is essential! Trim a piece off the stems to ensure the stem has a fresh cut. It's best to add specialized shrub food to the water to optimize longevity.
