    FloraPodium 'Geurweek'

On March 24th, FloraPodium was filled with color and scents as a result of the “Fragrance week”. Organized by various companies, with the slogan "All flowers should smell", FloraPodium aims at pointing out that smell is important for our experience and memories.

A number of Dutch florists saved a space in their shop during the weekend of the “Fragrance week” in which they exhibited the scented flowers to the public. The goal of the florists was to invoke memories through these smells. It was a very successful weekend where many visitors took a moment to experience what fragrant flowers have to offer.

FloraPodium has been able to contribute to this initiative by promoting a number of growers who produce scented flowers. The florists who participated in this weekend also received flowers that were promoted on FloraPodium. Florists and customers were very enthusiastic about the different scented flowers available. The story behind these nurseries was provided through promotional material that was made especially for this weekend and which customer found very interesting.  This information puts a face behind the products as people are able to see the actual faces of the growers that make it happen and read the stories behind their farms. For example, many people did not know that so many beautiful products are available from our Dutch floricultural sector. A fact that we at FloraPodium would like to change!

Now we introduce you to 6 growers below (those of you who have being  following Florapodium will  already be familiar with 3 of them)

    Who do you know?

We know the Convallaria  Majalis from nursery Chr. Eggink B.V. whose product is widely used for its fragrance in flower arrangements and in the perfume industry. The Narcissus' Soleil D'or of the grower W.F. Borrowing is one of the oldest types of Narcissus that exists. This Daffodil is over 400 years old and belongs to the Tazetta group. This is a group of Daffodils  has a  very strong fragrance. Hyacinthus Johanna is a hyacinth that is fills your home with color after the dark days of the winter. The fragrance that a hyacinth spreads, always gives a wonderful spring feeling.

    New; Akerboom

Akerboom is a Freesia nursery that grows between 25 and 30 different varieties of Freesias all year round. The goal of the company within the next 10 years is to grow without fossil fuels. The company no longer grows in the open ground but in containers that contain coconut fibers. As a result, they no longer have to steam the ground and less gas and manure is required. Growing on bins is a closed system that allows the grower to collect and reuse the drain water and manure. When using coconut fibers for growing the use of fertilizers and pesticides are significantly reduced as the plants stay healthier for longer time. The product they provided for the “Fragrance week” was the Freesia Maya. It is a yellow freesia named after Maya de bij (a children's series). The products of Akerboom contains Linalool, a fragrance that is produced by the flower itself. It has been proven proven that Linalool relieves stress.

    New; Divine Flowers

The Latin name of the Carnation is Dianthus and comes from the words Dios and Anthos, which means God and flower. 'Divine Flowers', the English translation of Godsbloem or divine flower, is therefore the name of the company where the beautiful Carnation Cover comes from. Anyone who believes in the boring Image of the Carnation has never taken a look at the greenhouse of this nursery. This company grows more than 80 types of carnations in all kinds of different forms. In addition, they exchange a lot in the assortment, making their offer always surprising. The Dutch Carnation smells much better compared to a carnation from abroad. This is because the flowers can stay longer on the plant. This also gives the flower a better color intent. Here in the Netherlands, the nursery can also provide the best breeding conditions.

    New; Kwekerij Hoogeveen

Kwekerij Hoogeveen grows Lathyrus odoratus in all sorts of different species. There are many nurseries from Lathyrus in the Netherlands, but Hoogeveen has the largest market share. This year the nursery will be 25 years old. Since this year the company has been growing all its products on stone wool. In this way they have much more insight into their cultivation. This can be from fertilizing the flowers to watering and the discovery of fungi: everything can be better controlled via this system. This form of growing is also sustainable, because you can keep track of what is and what is not needed. The lathyrus Winter Sunshine is sweet, fine and tender, but just for the fantastic scent you can’t resist it! As a result, the lathyrus is often used in romantic wedding bouquets.
