In recent weeks, the FloraPodium was well represented at various fairs, where we were allowed to showcase a versatile range of beautiful products. One of our sponsors was Voorn Sprayroses; a long-time friend of the FloraPodium. Last year we already visited this nursery. In the past year Voorn supplied various types of beautiful spray roses. One of them stood out because of its full clusters and wonderful scent. Jan Piet, sales representative for Voorn, told us everything about the "Bridal Flow".

Sprayroses

In 2017, Frank Voorn, owner of the company, made the switch from large-flowered single roses to the cultivation of spray roses. The greenhouse contains a wide range of different types of spray roses, all with heavy heads and sturdy stems. With this versatile range, Frank can offer his customers a total package with different colors to suit the different seasons.

Bridal Flow

In November 2019 we were already introduced to the fantastic spray rose "Bridal Flow". FloraPodium introduced the new "Wedding and Event" theme during the trade fair and Voorn sent us some beautiful varieties for the decoration. "Bridal Flow" not only fit her name fantastically in this theme. She really stood out because of her huge clusters and her delicious scent.
At Christmasworld in Frankfurt, the IPM in Essen and Maison et Objet in Paris, FloraPodium continued this year with the theme "Wedding and Events", whereby "Bridal Flow" and other types of Voorn spray roses caught the attention of many passers-by.

This will of course be the wedding date of 2020; a romantic winter wedding, where a rose like "Bridal Flow" cannot be missed. "Bridal Flow" is a large, well-filled spray rose, with snow-white flowers that open one by one. The most special feature of this spray rose is the scent. This rose smells really delicious! And in our eyes that only makes here the perfect choice for  bridal work, because this fragrance just adds value to a special day!

Every rose is a spray rose

Every rose could eventually become a "spray rose". Every rose has side shoots, which ensure that there are bunches of flowers. But by no means is every variety suitable to be marketed as a spray rose. In most cases the flowers stay much smaller than with the single roses. The single-flowered roses are crushed; the side shoots of the crop are removed, leaving only the main flower which then receives all the nutrients from the plant, making the flower bud much larger.
A typical feature of the Voorn spray roses are the thick stems and large, full flower clusters. However, If Frank decides the clusters are too small, he will qualify it for a shorter length category. This way the company can guarantee the highest quality.

Selection procedure

Before a variety is included in the cultivation, it must first undergo a strict selection procedure. The spray rose must meet quite a few requirements. Production, vase life, color and exclusivity play a major role in this. In addition, a variety must also fit into the climate and cultivation schedule.

The crop
After planting a crop, it takes twelve weeks before the first stems can be cut. There are also clear differences with a crop of single-flowered roses. The crop of the spray roses grows more "cut" as Jan explained.
This means that the bed is cut really empty, in contrast to a single-flowered rose, which produces flowers much more continuously.
Once a bed has been cut, the crop needs eight to ten weeks to recover. This is also taken into account when planting a new crop. With each variety, there is a week difference in planting between the beds, which keeps the supply of the roses as constant as possible.
The spray rose produces far fewer stems per m2 than a single rose. She also needs a lot more work. The flowers are hand-bunched as opposed to the single roses that are hung in a sorting machine with most growers. When harvesting, not only the length of the stems is considered, but also the number of flower buds. Frank only wants the best quality for his customers and does everything he can to achieve this goal.
